Remodeling Plastic Laminate Worktops

Here we shall share our experiences of thirty years of manufacturing of cupboards, wherein we improved upon and remodeled plastic laminate worktops in kitchens and bathrooms. We’ll tell you of the four promising ways of transforming an old top to an amazing looking new top. But, mind you, it’s not a typical DIY project and needs to be carried out by an expert dealing with countertop or cabinetry.

Resurfacing Existing Worktops With New Laminate

A very frequently asked question by people considering such a renovation is if this technique necessitates removing of old Formica? No, you need not do that. The new sheet is glued to the top of the existing surface. First, the present laminate is sanded using coarse sandpaper and subsequently contact glue is applied on which the fresh sheet gets adhered to. This technique is quite messy and releases a lot of dust particles in the surrounding air. Also, there are strong unpleasant fumes because of the glue and solvents used for the purpose. Most often, it works out economical to replace the old mica with the new one rather than completely changing the counters. Depending on the size of the kitchen, the process takes one to three days for completion. However, in certain cases it may not be possible, that you would know towards the end of this article.

Adding Beveled Edge Molding Pieces

If you are passionate about the present colors of the plastic laminate counters you have now, and like them to have a richer look, your best option will be to go for beveled edge molding. Even if you decided to have a new laminate, you could still use this technique to get heightened effect. It involves taking away of the present 1-1/2″ thick border of plastic and then cutting the new beveled edge molding to the required size that is glued down with yellow carpenters’ glue. Fixing of this new strip eliminates the black line, which is often visible on laminate tops. You can buy material from one of the cupboard manufacturing companies.

Attaching a Wood Edge

This process of remodeling plastic laminate countertop requires sticking of 3/4″ thick real-wood maple or oak on the outermost edges of the tops. The present laminate strips are taken out. The new wood is fixed, using carpenter’s glue and finishing nails. You can also attach wood to the top by screwing down the wood at edges and then closing the holes.

Painting Formica Tops

A company by the name of Giani Granite Paints has developed a complete system for resurfacing various types of countertops, and that includes Formica. Generally, the entire painting method is over in about four days. The process needs many steps for making the counter ready for a new paint, followed by many paint applications. Though it’s easy to follow the process, it has very exhaustive instructions, which must be adhered to for getting desired results. You may visit their website for reviewing the same.

The only problem which people face when considering remodeling of their Formica plastic laminate counters is if the top has a rolled over edge. This style of countertop is known as post-form top. In no way you can resurface them using new plastic nor can you modify the edge style to real wood or beveled plastic. Perhaps the only option is to adopt the paint system described above to change the appearance of your countertop.

Laminate Is Great Material For Your Kitchen

There are quite many options when you think along the lines of adding items that would enhance the looks and utility of your kitchen, but coming to the most used areas, of which the kitchen top is the busiest, you’ll be hard pressed to look for a better substitute than laminate.

It goes without saying that the most important reason for people favoring laminate is its strong composition. Usually, bonding of particleboard with an appropriate adhesive makes laminate worktops. While making the product resilient, this technique facilitates having boards in different colors and surface finishes.

The other advantage of this material is that you can clean easily and we know kitchens are sure to have spills from time to time. Moreover, laminates don’t get chipped off easily during the normal course of activities in the kitchen when some pot or pan is dropped accidentally.

If you opt to use laminate, you should so design the kitchen that the laminate remains the focal point. Another aspect to be borne in mind while designing the kitchen is to take note of how frequently the appliances and cabinets are used while you are working in the kitchen during different hours of the day.

Floor Plans

Depending on the layout of the room, you may start with the floor plan. Usually, there are three options, and all are equally popular and proven to work well since long. It may be added here that laminate being a flexible material can be cut to suit many designs of cabinets for the kitchen and its worktop or even flooring.

You may choose the simplest of plans known as one wall plan. As becomes apparent from the name of the plan, it employs just one wall for accommodating all the cabinets and kitchen appliances. This is a very practical plan and proves to be very convenient, and thus very popular. But there are other plans too.

The other plans include an L shaped plan wherein the appliances and cabinets get separated. Perhaps you would prefer to go for the galley or the peninsula kitchen that comprises of an open wall.

The Work Triangle

Laminate can further be gainfully exploited for designing your work triangle in the kitchen. Work triangle refers to the area between the sink, the refrigerator and the stove within which most of your movements in the kitchen are distributed. Having a lot of space on the laminate countertop surely helps to easily approach the required items and thus maintains continuity of materials while you work there.

Apart from the flooring and the worktops you need to consider additional factors while thinking of designing the kitchen. For instance, lighting is another important consideration for keeping the work area well illuminated. So, you will need to assess the correct size and number of electrical outlets required in the kitchen.

All in all, the design of the kitchen should facilitate easy and comfortable working as you spend a good part of your time therein while you are at home. And, in any case you would like to keep the environments healthy and hygienic and laminate is just one helpful material for achieving that.

Installing Laminate Countertops – Postform Worktops

When installing laminate countertops on your own, it is vital to be equipped with the right tools and the right detailed and easy to follow information as you only get one chance to perform this task. If you are confident of using DIY tools, then you should be able to install your tops yourself, using the methods described below.

Laminated tops come with a rolled laminate front edge that is known as a postform. Postformed tops are easily available at most DIY stores. You get them in varying lengths, depending on the manufacturer and DIY store you decide to buy from.

The most popular lengths are: 4.1m – (4100mm). Usually, the stores also offer half board lengths too, that is 2050mm long. The other popularly available size is 3m – (3000mm). DIY stores largely supply these lengths. Some stores would even offer you any desired length but may charge you a nominal fee for cutting it down.

It’s important that you assess your requirements to buy board of appropriate length. So, you measure the kitchen walls and find out where the joint is going to be cut at the corner, and that gives you the length of one countertop, and as a good safety measure just add 100mm to your measured length. Follow the same way and measure all lengths of the countertop.

If you decide to cut lengths on your own from a full board, you’ll have to support the length on two or more trestles/workmates. Measure the required length and make a mark for cutting. Make sure to measure twice, keeping in mind the proverbial saying of “measure twice cut once”. You can use a traditional fine-toothed saw or a jigsaw for the purpose.

Post-formed countertops are installed in two different ways; each gives a different look and requires a different skill level for fitting. The easier, less time consuming way involves using of thin metal strips, which you just keep over the joint and hide the cut. Here, you merely butt the first top exactly into the corner and the second top butts straight into the front edge of the first top. Avoid following this method when you don’t like to see the unpleasant metal strip sticking on the joint. They may lead to unhygienic conditions when food and drink does get caught between the strip and the top, and becomes too difficult to be removed.

The other way is to cut and get a butt and scribe joint. In this case the joint is not visible at all, thus giving a continued nice looking top without any sort of obstruction in the way. That’s the professional way to cut the joint. For the purpose you’ll need a countertop/worktop jig that enables you to cut one top into the other in the shape of a hockey stick. If you like your tops to have professional looks without any visible joints, that’s the way to do it. Fortunately, the jigs are not really expensive any more and the price shouldn’t deter you from accepting this challenge, but be sure to give attention to detail to get rewarding results.

Laminate Worktops Compared To Other Materials

Composite worktops, being somewhat porous, are vulnerable to staining and the only way to get rid of staining is by rubbing the surface a bit with abrasive paper. But, laminate worktops don’t need any such treatment because they are totally stain resistant.

Granite and Marble worktops can look out of this world and their prices have been coming down for quite sometime but the problem is these are natural products and you can’t ever be too sure of what you may be getting. In case of laminate worktops, the pattern is conventional and not surprising, as some of the patterns are only repeated every meter or so along the length of the worktop.

Granite and Marble countertops are porous too and need to be sealed against staining. However, the sealing tends to wear down and could even wear off in due course of time. Moreover, marble and granite worktops are too heavy thus necessitating installation by a specialist, as it is almost impossible to make even the slightest of cuts that are generally needed to get a perfect fit. Installation of laminate worktops poses no such problem.

Though stainless steel worktops have excellent looks when new, but soon begin to look dull on developing scratches, which can’t be avoided for long, and finally the worktops attain a different sheen. But, once again, these tops can’t be cut to size at site, and that is a drawback. Further, stainless steel worktops prices are more expensive than laminate worktops.

These days you also get glass worktops with marvelous finishes. Here again, they are cut to exact size at the point of purchase, as it’s not practical to cut them at site.

Glass worktops are also prone to scratching and thermal shock. So, once again, laminate worktops score better. Of course, you also get concrete worktops but they really don’t find many buyers, as there are available concrete look-a-likes in laminate worktops.

Therefore, it would be worthwhile to give a prolonged thought before finalizing on your worktops. Try visualizing their looks a couple of years down the line and do compare the cost with other kinds of laminates.
